CAF submits preliminary comments on CUSMA Renewal

CAF submits preliminary comments on CUSMA Renewal

The Canadian Apparel Federation has submitted preliminary comments to the Canadian government regarding the renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, (CUSMA).  CUSMA (known as USMCA in the United States) is the successor to NAFTA. Implemented in 2020, the agreement contained a requirement that the parties would need to renew the agreement in 2026.

The Canadian government established a consultation to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to submit preliminary comments about the renewal priorities. It is extremely unusual in a large trade agreement for the pact to be under review so soon after being implemented.

As we approach 2026, Canada, the United States and Mexico will establish mechanisms to review and re-authorize CUSMA. At this stage, the actual process is uncertain - but the results of the recent US election will undoubtedly impact the renewal process.

Please contact CAF Executive Director, Bob Kirke at bkirke@apparel.ca to receive a copy of the comments.
