PFAS reporting: Updated information on requests for extension

PFAS reporting: Updated information on requests for extension

Companies that have determined they need to report on the PFAS in their products should take note of the following.

CAF reached out to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to clarify the extension process.

ECCC has indicated that it will process all extension requests received on or before the day of the deadline, January 29, 2025..

They cannot grant any extension if one is submitted on or after January 30, 2025.

They also noted the following:

Following the request for an extension a program staff may reach out if we have additional questions to process the request.

Please note that the Department is experiencing a high volume of such requests, but companies will receive a decision and reply in due course.

It takes on average 15 business days to process an extension request. It is possible that companies may receive the official response after the reporting due date (January 29, 2025), which does not change the status of a granted extension request.

In the event of a denial received after the reporting due date, companies will be requested to submit the information available as soon as possible.  Should companies wish to follow up regarding their request, they are recommended to contact substances@ec.gc.ca after February 19, 2025 (i.e., 15 business days after the reporting due date).

Extension requests:  Instructions

Any person who is required to respond to the notice can request an extension of time to respond.

Requests for additional time to respond to the notice must be submitted no later than January 29, 2025, and must be submitted in writing to substances@ec.gc.ca.

A justification must be provided and specify the duration for which you need the extension. ECCC may consider extension periods that are up to, but not longer than the duration of the original reporting period (i.e., six months).

Requests for additional time to respond to the notice must be submitted in writing to substances@ec.gc.ca and must include:

  • the organization name
  • contact information
  • substance identifier(s) involved
  • the reason for the request

Indicate in the subject line of your email “PFAS Notice Extension Request”.

Extension requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and an official response letter is sent to the individual company with the decision.
